AMA Questions

  1. Will Ghost coin be listed in stock market, like BTC/USD?
  2. Would it be possible to use the ghost e-sim with custom phones, for instance a Raspberry Pi phone? What would the minimum requirements be?
  3. Could you explain some more about the 'quantum threat'? How exactly cold-staking would work?
  4. About Telaghost, will it require a specific phone model to run?
  5. Could you please elaborate more on how the 'proof-of-stake' approach can help avoid common problems we see in Bitcoin mining, such as 'pooling farms, use of ASICs, centralization of mining power'?
  6. It's said in the Ghost Whitepaper that " Checkpointing is considered controversial in the cryptocurrency community, as it is a “centralized” solution". Could you explain how this solution works and what are the risks involved? Is it possible to do "checkpointing" without centralization?
  7. Is there any schedule for expanding the e-sim services to other countries?

Governments CAN kill Bitcoin- they just don't care (for now)

I understand that my opinion is probably an unpopular one, so I expect a ton of downvotes.
Let's imagine a perfect scenario- everyone knows for Bitcoin, volume is high, people are spending it and/ or stacking sats. Now, this is not a good thing for govs, reasons were mentioned thousands of times on the internet so I will not bother about mentioning all of that again. How to kill Bitcoin, you may ask? Declare it illegal, start the propaganda machine, prosecute people who are mining or using it, shut down mining farms under the accusation of supporting the system that is used by criminals- add a bit of human trafficking, drug dealing and money laundering to the headlines to make it look justifiable in the eyes of average Joe. After all of that, hashing power will probably go to 20% of what is now. Next step, seize the ASICS and conduct a 51% attack. Congrats, no more BTC. You may say that your rights are hurt, but CCP (Communist Party of China) doesn't give a fuck.
There is a cryptocurrency that could survive a "mass extinction" of that kind. It's called Idena and it's truly unstoppable. It's using a novel protocol called "Proof of Person". In order to mine it, you must prove (validate) that you are actually a human being, all without 3rd party or personally identifiable documents (aka KYC). How to prove that you're actually a human being? Currently, validation days happen a few times a month, and validations start at the same time all over the globe- New York is at 9:30AM, Berlin is at 3:30PM and Sydney is at 11:30PM. Validations involve solving a user-made flips- they are captchas that are impossible to solve by machines- because they involve abstract thinking and emotions, which only humans have. Incentive to make flips is simple- to validate on next validation day you must make 3 flips which will be randomly distributed to other users on the next validation day. Idena introduces sybil resistance by limiting the time of validations, you can validate yourself on one node, it's almost impossible for one person to have two nodes. All mining rewards are split equally to every miner, so there is no concentration of hashing power, mining farms are impossible and stopping/ censoring is impossible because Idena can work on any 64bit OS- Windows, Linux, MacOS and even Raspberry Pi- Computing power is irrelevant and it will be irrelevant forever! To stop Idena, governments must ban computers, from all people who are running this most decentralized and democratic currency on the globe! Sounds like an impossible task to me.

Buy Lightning Point of Sale

Hi Reddit!
Run your own node and accept lightning network payments today! I've managed to get it ALL running on an Android phone! A bitcoin core node with the full blockchain(non-pruning), a lightning network node and a simple point of sale system.
Features:

Buy at lightningmerchant.com

I realise it's pricey at 0.075btc(mobile phone and 400GB sdxc). If your budget doesn't stretch that far, I'd recommend the cheaper alternatives running on Raspberry Pi($300 casa, £199.95 lightning.farm). Alternatively you can wait for neutrino and watchtowers in order to run a lightespv client.

Is bitcoin mining dead?

Hey guys, so I recently just got into bitcoin mining and am mining from my pc at home on my nvidia gtx 1070. Yields about 2.77 dollars a day at 337 mhz by the looks of it, unless I'm reading the program wrong. I have seen that people see it's not worth mining anymore when in my head it sure as he'll is...if I use a raspberry pi with a 10 Port USB expander and I plug those USB block eruptors in running at about 8ghz each, which are at about 0.34 dollars a day maybe more.... that's about 6 dollars a day. That's about 42 dollars a week .. so on so forth...im from South Africa and the currency is 13.80 rand to 1 dollar so a month that's about 2300 rand a month. I could probably buy groceries for a month for my girlfriend and myself with That To give you perspective. Now if I have 4 of those farms it goes up quote a bit. I cant Imagine it using much more power than it currently is because my raspberry pi at the moment and my desktop computer are on 24/7.
Am I misunderstanding the concept or am I being too optimistic or why do people say that it's not worth it anymore?
Really appreciate the help guys...i actually haven't stopped thinking about this as a 3rd income.

CPU mining costs

Hey guys, I need a little help,
So, I live at home with my parents. I mine on my i3 desktop and on two single board computers (raspberry and orange pi), so I don't think I'm using much more power than I otherwise would be since at least my pc would be on anyway and the sbc's don't take up much power. Still, my dad has been reading a lot about bitcoin mining and how expensive electricity can be. How can I explain to him that my low power setup barely costs him anything compared to ASIC miner farms in Russia?
Thanks:)

ELI5? Recently tried to familiarized myself with the basic ideas of bitcoin and to get my head around two theoretical problems.

Hey you guys,
as I already said in the title, there are two points concerning the overall design of the bitcoin system that I do not understand and hope to get explanations for from all you experts.
If this kind of post is not what this subreddit is concerned with, I apologize in advance.
My first question concerns the limited amount of possible bitcoins. It is inevitably that over time some people will lose their keys or abandon their wallet. If no new currency is introduced into the system, I understand that this will result in deflation, but wouldn't it also slowly dry out the currency (over very long time)? It this trend countered by any strategy in the system?
My second question concerns the security of sealing blocks. If the sealing process is designed to be an extremely costly process memorywise and hence is rewarded with currency for the miners to guarantee that some malicious attempt to undermine this process can not hold against the processing power, how can the system guarantee save verifications of transactions, one mining is not rewarded any more, i.e. wouldn't all the mining farms simply vanish, leaving only some do-gooders with their raspberry pi to counter manipulations?
I'd be really thankful if somebody could clear this up for me. Thanks in advance!
EDIT: Thanks everyone for your kind and accessive replies.

Idea: ASIC transcoding

Ok, so we already know plex has 3rd party distributed transcoding with https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/178320/plex-remote-transcoder-a-distributed-transcoding-backend-for-plex/p1
So, I was pricing out a 4x E7-4820 box to add to my current farm when I thought about how AMD (and most SoC) use ASIC to do hardware transcodes. That got me thinking, using something like the distributed transcode, anyone think it would be possible to use ASIC bitcoin miners to do transcodes? Horse power wise they should be able to handle some pretty impressive numbers and streams at once, power wise they use little power, and USB 3 should be able to easily handle a few 4k streams per connection. If something like this could work, a few raspberry pis with some USB 3 ports and 5-10 older bitcoin miners all thrown into a farm should theoretically be able to outclass most highend server class systems available now (sub $5k) for near nothing. What do you guys think, possible?

New to NavCoin? Read here!

Welcome to the NavCoin subreddit!

What is NavCoin?
NavCoin is a cryptocurrency based off Bitcoin. While it offers all the benefits of Bitcoin, it also has added benefits such as faster and cheaper transactions, the ability to earn 5% on your NAV and optional private payments.
A key difference is that NavCoin uses the Proof of Stake algorithm to secure the network (as opposed to Proof of Work that Bitcoin and others use). The benefit of using Proof of Stake is that it's much more lightweight and you don't need huge servers or farms to mine NavCoin. All you need is to install a Core Wallet, turn on staking mode and you will earn 5% on the amount in your wallet.
What sets us apart?
How do I buy NavCoin?
The cheapest way to get NAV is through an exchange.
  1. Buy Bitcoin or Ethereum - for example using LocalBitcoins
  2. Join an exchange such as Poloniex, Bittrex or Binance and transfer your Bitcoins to your account. Some exchanges require verification for trading or withdrawing.
  3. Once there find a NavCoin trading pair (such as BTC-NAV or ETH-NAV) and make a transaction. You set the price you want to pay and how much you want and wait until someone matches that offer.
  4. You now have your NAV! The next step is to send this to your wallet and start staking. Tutorials for setting up a wallet are available here.
Where can I get more information about the project?
How can I reach the team?
If you want to get involved in the community, have development or marketing ideas or need technical assistance it is best to join our Discord-Server.
For other inquiries you can send a mail to [email protected].

Big news update for pimp

Hello PiMPs!
dbct here with the biggest news of the year!
Imgur
So far itś a wild ride so where to begin, let's begin by this pimp is staying very up to date on the miner programs so you can just type "pimpup" and it will download the latest pimp and minerfarm software instantly. you can then pick any of the miners to update in place. it's that easy! (or look below and for info on what we have have put in the new fresh RC11 release).
Part of the pimp family called miner.farm. This is a secure web-app that lets you control the miner in many ways (start/stop and switching to name just a couple) Also, our new pimp versions come with the free edition of miner.farm. this lets you see the miner on the PiMP Farm page for all the pimps to use.
We are working on miner.farm every day to put in the features that you ask us for. We also decreased all of the subscription prices to make it easy for all pimps to control their rigs like the pros do and we are working hard to give you the best mobile view so you can manage your rigs where you want when ever you want.
Next to this we have a lot of great things lined up:

BlackBox Algotrading Bitcoins Arbitrage Raspberry PI Raspberry Pi 4 Bitcoin Mining For 24 Hours! - YouTube Raspberry Pi Bitcoin Mining For 12 Hours! - YouTube How to Mine for Bitcoin with a Raspberry Pi - Part 1 of 2 Raspberry Pi CPU Mining Monero Cryptocurrency

MinePeon is an arm mining platform for the earlier generation of bitcoin miners (ASIC & FPGA) that interfaced with a computer via USB. It ran on the Raspberry PI 1 & 2 and there was even a version or two for the Beagle Bone Black making it a very cheap and efficient alternative to running a full PC. Four years ago the Raspberry Pi has started a revolution. People around the world have build countless projects with the small board, like robots, automated pet feeders, Bitcoin farms, pirate radio transmitters and many, many more. With this board the sentence “your imagination is the only limit” literally became true. You can earn cryptic money by mining, without having to deposit money. However, you certainly don't have to be a miner who has his own encryption. You can also buy crypto by using the Fiat currency (USD, EUR, AUR, etc.); you can trade on a stock exchange like Bitstamp using another crypto (for example: Using Ethereum or NEO to purchase Bitcoin); You can even win by playing video games or by 21 raised $120 million in venture capital, a record for a Bitcoin company. As their initial product offering, 21.co released a Raspberry Pi-like device with built-in Bitcoin features; mining included. While such low-powered mining devices earn very little income, even a few hundred Satoshis opens the door to automated micro-payments… Bitcoin farms that operate at scale use these advantages to maximize their returns. As the difficulty of mining bitcoin increases, and the price lags behind, it is becoming harder and harder for small miners to make a profit. Bitcoin Difficulty vs Price by F2Pool.
